Surgical cotton or absorbent cotton is one of the most popular and widely used medical textile.
Surgical cotton or absorbent cotton is one of the most popular and widely used medical textile. The bleached cotton fiber rolled to different sizes is used in dressing of wounds, cleaning of wounds, cleaning of injured/bruised surfaces, padding of swollen body parts, protection of sensitive body parts during clinical care, etc. This is one of the oldest medical textiles still found in modern era.
TThe basic functions of the product are,
  • Absorbency
  • Whiteness
  • Infection free
  • Free from trash, leaf bits, or other vegetable matters
  • 100% cotton fiber
  • Free from chlorine and other harmful chemicals

Since absorbency is very important the fiber should have high micronaire value, while shorter fiber length is acceptable. Hence use of comber noil or flat strips in blend with virgin fiber is a common fiber mix used in industry. The fiber is cleaned, opened, bleached, carded, rolled and cut to different sizes. Carding is critical because the fiber is in bleached condition and harsh. Industry can be composed of complete line from opening to rolling or can bleach and sell fiber bales or can purchase bleached cotton and convert to rolls. Apart from surgical cotton the industry can make other products such as zig-zag cotton matts, mopping pads, swabs, ear buds, sheets, etc. for cosmetic and other applications.

The product being cotton based has huge export potential.

Though there are more than few hundred units in India the major players are less than a dozen. An ideal product for investment at any part of the country. Normally the product in finished form is sold within a distance of 200 km due to higher cost of transportation of this bulky material.
